Can We Find Soul Satisfaction in Work?

”Without work, all life goes rotten. But when work is soulless, life stifles and dies.”
Albert Camus

What exactly is soul satisfaction? Aside from the money, status or power that your work may provide, when work is enjoyable, when it provides a private sense of well being and/or a deeper connection with something you value and adds value to your own spirit, we see it as soul satisfying work.

The joy of soul satisfaction in work is that it allows you to be who you prefer to be. It fits with your personality. The work need not define who you are, but the work does not conflict with the best in you or wear you down over time. While working conditions may not be entirely satisfying, the profession or work itself provides a sense of rightness and well-being.

When a sense of aggravation, irritation or demoralization overrides that sense of well being, it is time to explore whether satisfaction can be found in this job, or this profession. Perhaps it is time to look to another. If so, it can be useful to reflect on what exactly provides soul satisfaction.

Is it the joy of helping others? Is it the chance to be out-of-doors? Is there a creative outlet or chance for self expression in the work? Does solving problems or mysteries provide enjoyment? As we consider our work and our lives, we need consistently to take private time to look within to find the answer to soul satisfaction. When the critical elements of satisfaction are identified, it becomes easier to identify work which may provide the connection with the heart’s desire.
